Pet's are More than Pets, They are Family too!
I have read about animal rights for a while now and I have always thought that there should be laws against animal testing and cruelty, etc. In November, my husband bought me a Teacup Yorkie for my birthday. Never in my life did I ever think that this little dog would find such a big place in my heart. Odie is one of my children. He has his own personality and his own attitude.
Well, during this holiday season, there has been a story about a dog that was shot by law enforcement, in a town near here, without having a solid reason to do so. Prior to Odie, I would have thought that this was a sad story and would have gone on with my day, but now I feel horrified that there was nothing done to provide justice to the owners of the dog and the poor dog itself.
If you are a dog, cat or pet owner of any kind, then you have to realize that there is not enough legal rights out there for animals and especially not for pets. If you feel the way I do, that your pet is a very large part of your family, then we have to start making our voices heard on animal rights and rights for pets! I am using this blog to make my voice heard, but I also like to share my life experiences as well.
My dog, Odie, made me realize how much pets can become part of the family and you forget that they are animals. They become little people. Odie got his paws on my son's Binkies. He ate 2 of the nipples. We did not think about the nipples being too big for his digestive system and almost lost him. The nipples moved down into his intestines and instead of passing they cause 2 holes. Before we knew that was the problem, he started puking and foaming at the mouth. He got very grouchy and bit me for the first time and drew blood. We decided to take him to the vet the next morning to see what they thought the problem was. Never once did I question his personality or think he was a "bad dog". I knew he had to be sick. So many people swore that Odie was rabid or he was a "bad dog", but we just knew that couldn't be the case. Sure enough, my little guy was on the verge of death. They did an emergency surgery and fixed him up. Now, he is the most loving, tame dog you will ever meet.
My point to this story is that animals cannot talk for themselves. They show pain in odd ways compared to humans. We have to make sure that if an animal acts mean or unusual, we owe it to them to make sure that they are healthy and that something isn't wrong. "Don't judge a book by its cover" is an old lesson, but one we must learn to follow.
